Life Lessons from Wicked, Shifting Perspectives and Stepping Into Power
Last night, I watched Wicked, and I left the theater reflecting on the powerful themes woven into the story. When I watch movies or shows, I’m always on the lookout for universal themes, archetypes, and the hidden layers of psychology.
Stories have a way of reflecting human experience back to us, offering lessons in awareness, growth, and connection. Wicked was no exception.
At its heart, Wicked is a tale of perception, courage, and transformation. It challenges the narratives we believe about ourselves and others—and invites us to look deeper.
Here are a few awareness lessons that stood out to me:
1. Perception vs. Reality
So much of Elphaba’s story is shaped by how others see her. But as the story unfolds, we realize that the “Wicked Witch” isn’t wicked at all—she’s misunderstood, misjudged, and misrepresented.
Awareness Check-In: Where in your life might someone’s perception of you not align with your truth? And where might you be holding onto a story about someone else that needs a second look?
2. The Complexity of Relationships
Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship is messy, complicated, and beautiful. They’re opposites in so many ways, yet their bond deepens when they move beyond the surface and truly see each other.
Awareness Check-In: How can you lean into understanding someone who sees the world differently from you?
3. Courage in the Face of Judgment
Elphaba chooses authenticity over approval. It’s not easy, and it comes at a cost—but it also leads her to freedom and self-discovery.
Awareness Check-In: Where are you being called to show up as your true self, even if it means stepping outside of your comfort zone?
4. Shifting Perspectives
I loved how Wicked took a familiar story and flipped it on its head. It reminded me of how powerful it can be to shift our perspective and question the stories we’ve been told.
Awareness Check-In: What story in your life could you reinterpret with fresh eyes?
5. Self-Acceptance and Empowerment
Elphaba’s journey is a reminder that we don’t need to be “good” by anyone else’s definition to be powerful. Her strength comes from embracing who she is, fully and unapologetically.
Awareness Check-In: What part of yourself do you need to fully accept to step into your power?
Ultimately, Wicked reminds us that life is rarely as black and white as it seems. The stories we tell—about ourselves, others, and the world—are shaped by perception, but awareness allows us to challenge those narratives. When we embrace complexity, lean into courage, and step into our truth, we create the kind of transformation that leads to deeper connection and self-empowerment.
What about you? What stories are you ready to rewrite, and how can greater awareness help you see yourself—and others—more clearly?
To Powerful,Positive Change…Cheers!
